Sister Friends

“If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care — then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.” Philippians 2:1-4 MSG

Friends play an important role in a person’s life, and thanks to social media most of us have a lot of friends. Unfortunately, the concept of “friend” is used rather loosely in the online world and quickly redefining the definition of friendship. As we become more technologically connected, we’re slowly losing our friends—our “sister-friends”.

Proverbs 17:17 tells us that a friend loves at all times and Proverbs 18:24 says a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Simply put, they are our “sister-friends”—loving us in good times and bad. My sisters live in other states, so I enjoy sister-friends in my life. They are the kinds of friends we all desire and strive for. Friends that regularly laugh with us, cry with us, challenge us and make us better daughters of the King.

“Sister-friends” bring a unique relationship, but they are rare and hard to find. Unfortunately, we want these kinds of friends, but we rarely are them. Nurturing friendships takes time and intentional work. Especially as our lives get busy and complicated. Friendships, although important to me, often take a backseat; other things demand my attention.

So when I do gather with my friends, I want it to be full of conversations of substance. I don’t want to mess with even the littlest morsels of gossip, nor do I want to focus on all the negativity of this world. I don’t want to miss the richest moments in life—sacred moments.

Lord, thank You for keeping my heart true in my relationships with my sister-friends. I want us to build each other up as well as honor and respect each other in the good and bad times. Amen
